The correct marking of construction site vehicles with warning markings

Construction site vehicles enjoy special rights, but these are linked to adequate marking. The vehicles in question include both large and small models: from the road construction authority's car to the road construction transporter operating on the motorway to lorries on construction sites. The latter must be visible as early as possible at entrances and access roads.

All these special vehicles are subject to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) and thus to a special labelling requirement, which is regulated in § 35 (StVO) ‘Special rights’. Which vehicles must be marked and how?

As described above, the marking requirement applies to all vehicles that are granted special rights under the Road Traffic Regulations in the course of their work. The type of vehicle is irrelevant here, as small cars, SUVs, vans, pick-ups, lorries and special emergency vehicles may all be involved.

The warning markings themselves are subject to the requirements of DIN 30710 ‘Safety markings for vehicles’. This standard specifies the following characteristics for warning markings on your vehicles, such as construction site vehicles: The warning markings must be affixed to the front and rear of the vehicle in white and red, depending on the standard area. This corresponds, for example, to four standard areas on the front left and right of the vehicle. These are oriented to the left or right, depending on the side to be fitted.

A standard surface area measures 141 × 141 mm. The red/white warning markings in accordance with DIN 30710 are designed for fixed structures in accordance with RA 2. The colour and texture of the microprismatic surfaces must meet the highest standards.

A note on application: Vehicles that are also used transversely to the direction of travel must be marked on the sides to the same extent as on the front and rear.

Additional headlights and lights in accordance with StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations)

Part 3 (Construction and Operating Regulations) of the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations) regulates the technical requirements for vehicles.

Section 52 ‘Additional headlights and lights’ states under (4):

One or, if horizontal and vertical visibility requires it, several warning lights for yellow flashing light – all-round light – may be fitted:
1. Vehicles used for the construction, maintenance or cleaning of roads or roadside facilities, or for refuse collection, and which are marked with red and white warning markings (safety markings) in accordance with standard DIN 30710, March 1990 edition, (...)

A red and white warning marking in accordance with DIN 30710 therefore entitles the vehicle to use yellow warning lights.

What is the challenge when it comes to application and what solution do we offer?

Warning markings are available – including from us – in rolls, among other things. This has the advantage that you can purchase them in larger quantities and use them flexibly for different vehicles. However, cutting them to size yourself and applying them to construction site vehicles and the like involves a great deal of risk.

The surfaces of vehicles are uneven and differ between cars, vans, lorries and even large emergency vehicles.
