Making vehicle contours optimally visible

Retroreflective films ensure safety and visibility, especially at night. After all, people spend around half their lives in this environment, approximately 4,360 hours per year. This opens up entirely new safety requirements. Legislators have also recognised this and made contour markings mandatory in many cases.

We therefore offer contour markings in accordance with ECE 104 for both fixed and tarpaulin structures, as well as contour markings without approval in daylight fluorescent colours in accordance with DIN 14502-3.

Gaps and Tankers Stickers

Gaps, also known as broken lines, are used to mark lines on municipal vehicles and thus increase night-time visibility thanks to their reflective effect. German Police Gaps, which have been used by the German police for years, are particularly well known. However, gaps are also being used more and more frequently for line marking in the fire brigade and rescue services. We supply gaps in various shapes and colours, whether in white from Oralite VC110 Livery Film – formerly German Police Film Plus – or fluorescent and retro-reflective in daylight yellow from Oralite VC612 Flexibright, as design112 Flexi-Gaps. Marking with gaps requires a special permit.

Contour marking: mandatory for new vehicles

Retroreflective outline markings on trucks have been permitted in Germany for years in accordance with UN ECE R 48. With effect from 1 July 2011, they are mandatory for all new registrations of commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 7.5 tonnes, a length of more than 6.00 metres (side) and a width of more than 2.10 metres (rear). This also applies to fire engines.

What should you pay attention to?

Only mark with tested and approved Class C retro-reflective film with a test mark.

  • Width of contour marking: 50 mm
  • Approved film can be identified by the test mark in accordance with UN ECE R 104, which appears every 50 cm on the film.
  • White or yellow contour markings are permitted on the sides.
  • Red or yellow contour markings are permitted at the rear.
